Bucket List - Happy Hour

Happy Hour is a magical time at our house. Sacred, even. It comes in many different forms, but is an understood time that everyone chills out, grabs a chair and a drink, and we all just talk.
Sometimes we are inside, lots of times we are poolside.
Sometimes Dad joins us if he gets home early enough.
I enjoy our family.

Bucket List Summer

Summer is a huge event at our house. It is looked forward too, dreamed about, researched, promises made upon - "when summer comes..."
As the kids have gotten older, we usually have a theme. A couple of summers ago it was our "Summer of Adventure." Every day was a specific kind of day - water day (we went to the beach, crabbing, splash pad, etc.), park day (we checked out all of the parks in our area), library day, craft day, etc. Lots of planning.

Last summer was the summer without a plan. I planned nothing. I think that I was burned out from the year before. The kids eyes rolled into the backs of their heads and everyone begged to go back to school.

This summer I've tried a different approach. Semi-planned and semi-not. It's been great. Except for the first week. The first week of summer is inevitably hard at our house. Everyone is coming off of breakneck speed from the school year and suddenly all activity grinds to a halt. I want nothing except to  hide under the covers in my room and the kids are suddenly bored and unsure of what to do with free time. So instead of embracing their new found freedom, they fight, and pick at each other, and whine. Before this picture was taken, I was contemplating hanging all of them by their toes in the backyard.
So during our first week of adjustment, we all sat down for a massive afternoon of creativity. I was actually stunned with how long it kept them occupied. This is the "Bucket List Summer." (I don't know why, but I feel that I must label our summers.)

We all sat down and made lists of what we wanted to do with our summer. Some of the things were completely unattainable (Hawaii, swimming with dolphins) and some are completely doable (happy hour, family vacation, visiting the museums.)
The lists are hanging on the fridge door and every time that something is completed from someone's list, it gets checked off. The beauty is that there have been a couple of things that have been added to the list so that they could be checked off (a whole afternoon of swimming in the rain.)

We have definitely slowed down and are enjoying the process. Summer is a beautiful thing.

Sister Weekend 2014

I am so fortunate to have lots of sisters in my family. For those that don't know or may have forgotten, I am the oldest of eight kids. From that eight, there are five girls and three boys. Thankfully, one of my brothers has married and brought us another sister! When we get together for sister weekend, there are six of us. I have to say, it is loads of fun!

Last year was our first annual Sister Weekend and I hosted at my house. We went to the beach, swam in the pool, and shared the space with my husband, four kids and a dog. It was a little crowded.

For Christmas, Shane got me a reservation for the largest cabin at Bastrop State Park near Austin, for us to use for our weekend. We will definitely have to do this again! Bastrop State Park is in the Lost Pines region and the park used to be covered in towering pine trees and forests. With the ongoing drought that Texas has suffered, the forests and most of the park burned 3 summers ago. I was a little concerned as we were getting ready to go. I knew that it has been in a recovery phase. I'm sure that the park doesn't live up to it's former glory, but it is still a beautiful space and the burned trees added it's own kind of beauty. New trees have been planted all over the park and look like little bits of hope and promise.
This was the view from one of the many lookouts throughout the park. I got there early and of course had to explore so that I could be Tour Guide Barbie when the rest arrived.
Our cabin was located on this beautiful lake. No swimming, only fishing. Other campers took advantage the whole time that we were there. It was beautiful.
Time for selfies! The others arrived and it was time to get the party started. This is my sister, Mia. She is  the next sibling in the line of eight, and just so happens to be my best friend.
We toodled around the the lake for awhile. The skies were so blue.
Our cabin was equipped with a full kitchen, so we brought our own food and lived it up at the cabin for the night.

This was the porch to our cabin. We spent quite a lot of time out here sitting and visiting. The porch was screened and kept out the bugs.
The next morning we got up bright and early and decided that we should go for a hike. At the top of this trail head, Judith (the youngest) asked if we should look at the map. We all said, "Nah...how bad could it be? Surely, it's going to loop around!"
And we were off!
Esther and Naomi kept trying to push over dead trees. They looked brittle, and signs posted everywhere warned to watch for falling trees. Those trees were stronger than they looked! The girls never could knock one over!

Judith was rocking a huge hat. She was the only one smart enough to watch her complexion. At this point, we were all still strolling.
Lots of beautiful flowers.
Here was where we started to realize that this trek may be a little longer than anticipated. Maybe we should have looked at that map...
Still beautiful things to see.
Bekah
Esther, Bekah, and me. (They are the twins.)
Three hours later. At one point, we came across the part of the trail that the wardens had told us to stay off of when we checked in. What do they know?! We took it anyway. We probably should have listened. Bekah finally saved us. She pulled out that smart phone and looked up a map. We would probably still be out there if it weren't for her. None of us had put on any sun screen. We didn't bring any water. We were dumb. But we had fun!
From L to R: Mia, Bekah, Naomi (Dan's wife), Esther, Judith

On our way back to the car (we were so far out that we actually had to walk on a park road for a while) the girls challenged each other to sprint the hill to the end. Of course we all did it (except for Judith and Naomi.) I have never been so glad to get back to the car!

After that hike, it was time for some lunch! We hit up a burger spot across from the park and listed as one of Texas Monthly's top 50 burgers in the state. If you are in the area, check out Roadhouse. It was good!
I had the bleu cheese burger on an onion bun. I am a sucker for bleu cheese. Get's me every time!
Bastrop has a fantastic downtown. After lunch we headed off to explore. There is a river walk through town complete with art galleries, tiny restaurants and delis, great shopping, and most importantly, a winery! A girls trip is not complete without a winery! I highly recommend the Colorado River Winery. I have become a fan of Texas wineries and have tried quite a few. I would say that this was one of my favorites.
I did a terrible job with this group selfie. After this one, I got fired. :)
After all of that, it was time to head back and make some s'mores. Thank goodness that someone was there that can build a fire. Fires and pie crusts. My Achilles heel.
While we were out here living life, a little girl across the lake fishing with her family hooked herself with her fish hook. You can only imagine the screaming. Sound carries over the water. There were some tense moments there for a little while. I was thanking my stars that my kids weren't there.
Naomi was communing with nature and caught a frog!
The next morning we had coffee together before we all went our separate ways back home. These girls are so special to me. Plans are already underway for next year! I think that we need t-shirts.

You Don't Know Anything

This morning on the way to church, I was having to apologize for being grumpy as we were trying to get out of the door.
"It's not always easy to be the mom." I said.

"Then why did you decide to have all of us?" asked Landry.

"Well, I didn't really decide. God chose to give all of you to me."

"Well, I'm ready for God to give me kids too."

"Landry, I think that you need to grow up a little more first."

"Yeah," threw in Hayden, "as long as you still believe in unicorns, your kids will never know anything."

Keeping It Classy

Hayden went to take our little puppy, Harry, out to do his business this morning. Shane, walking by the front door, peeked out and let out an "oh know..."

Harry was doing his business in one corner of the front yard. Hayden was doing his business right beside him. Shane opened up the door and hollered, "Hey! Who is taking who to the potty?!"

"Hehehe" laughed Hayden.

When I grow up...

Landry came and joined us in bed this morning before we all started the day. Shane and I were talking to her about how big she is getting. (She can reach the light switch now! Wahhh...)

She used to want to be a pop star when she grew up. Dad was asking her if that was still her dream.

L: "No. I don't want to be a singer or a pop star. You have to write lots of songs, ride on a bus, and never come home."
D: "So, what do you want to do?"
L: "Just stay home and be a mom."
D: "What will we be when you have all these babies?" (Expecting her to say a grandpa and grandma.)
L: "Old. You'll just be old."

Merry Christmas!

Every year, I swear that this will be the year that I take an adorable picture of the kids, print cards and send holiday greetings near and far. Every year, I get the adorable picture and then...nothing. Then I say something lame like, "Here's the picture that you would have gotten if I had sent it in the mail."

So, once again, pretend that this came in the mail. Pretend that it was on high quality paper and said Merry Christmas.

I do have a funny story about this picture. We went down to our lake and were walking around and I found this log and made all of the kids sit on it and smile. Jones was not having it. He was upset and ready to go. We snapped our cute picture and were on our merry way.

A couple of weeks later, Uncle Noah and Aunt Mia came to visit and we took them to our lake. We happened to walk by our photo spot and look what we found. I took a picture because it was dead. Not five minutes later, Landry climbed up on that log in the background and as she jumped down another snake, alive this time, came out with her. I didn't get a picture of that. As we continued around the lake we found two more live snakes.

I made my kids pose in the middle of a snake den. That's why the dog was freaking out. Once again, mother of the year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
